This great county has it all. Proper tea, check. Proper puddings, check. Sean Bean, check. You could finish reading this blog post now if you wanted to. But for pragmatic reasons, the show must go on!

Yorkshire folk are proud of their heritage. There are lads and lasses across this county with Yorkshire tea running through their veins, shouting ‘teacake’ from the old steel Mills of Sheffield over to the cobbled streets of York. There is even a calendar day dedicated to God’s own country. On 1st August, Yorkshire day is celebrated all over as it consistently trends on the worldwide Twitter rankings year after year on this day.

But what makes Yorkshire special? And why should you move here?

The History
Being central to the Industrial Revolution and once home to Roman and Viking settlers, Yorkshire is knee deep in history. This is evident as you travel around the county, where you will notice a number of beautiful structures varying from castles and churches to abbeys and waterways. Go explore!

The Cities
If Yorkshire is your home, you are never too far away from a city to visit. Many people may not associate Yorkshire with city life, but this county is home to a number of cities such as Leeds, Sheffield, York – and let’s not forget UK’s City of Culture 2017, Hull. These are all major players in the economies of each region and nationally, too – Leeds is home to the largest financial sector outside of the capital.

The Countryside
Being home to bustling cities, it’s easy to forget that Yorkshire boasts examples of stunning natural beauty. From Yorkshire’s Heritage Coastline to the South Pennines and the Yorkshire Wolds, there are plenty of natural sights to feast your eyes upon. But let’s not forget about the National Parks – 3200 square kilometres of beauty spread across three National Parks are reason enough to move to Yorkshire.

The Culture
The past few years has seen Yorkshire boost its cultural offerings with Hull’s recent UK City of Culture award and Leeds’ bid for European Capital of Culture 2023. However, the county has always boasted a number of influential institutions such as the Hepworth Gallery and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, both based in Wakefield. Let’s just say that there is no shortage of creative minds up north!

The Food
Ah, the humble Yorkshire pudding. World famous; and rightly so. Name one person who doesn’t like them? Struggling? Yeah, thought so. But what other culinary delights does Yorkshire hold? There’s Parkin, and Wensleydale cheese amongst others. There is no other county in England (outside of London), which holds as many Michelin-starred restaurants as Yorkshire. One of these, the Black Swan country pub in Oldstead, North Yorkshire, has recently been named the best restaurant in the world!

The Drink
What better to compliment some award-winning food than with a traditional pint of Yorkshire ale? And trust us, there is no shortage of that in Yorkshire – being home to a number of historic and more contemporary breweries alike. If you’re not a beer drinker, then maybe tea is your thing. Tea is a serious deal here in Yorkshire, and with a multitude of brands to choose from, there is no surprise that it is Yorkshire’s number one export.

The People
The prospect of moving your life to the largest county in the country can be a daunting aspect. To combat this, Yorkshire has a number of unique assets that can’t be found anywhere else: its people. The friendliest in the land some might say, and we can’t disagree with that one. One thing is for sure, the Yorkshire folk will make your move to God’s Own County the most welcoming move possible.
